Heavy metals can have significant impacts on human health due to their toxicity and potential to accumulate in the body over time. Some heavy metals, such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic, are particularly harmful even at low concentrations. The estimation of hazards of vegetable intake to human health as well as explore the of heavy metals accumulation in different vegetables (cucumbers, tomato, eggplant, and bell peppers) collected in Erbil city from different source locally and imported from nearby country are conducted. The heavy metals concentration (cooper, zinc, lead and cadmium) was measured and analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrophotometry. The maximum concentration of Pb was 27.95 mg/kg and the minimum was 6.49 mg/kg; for Cd, the concentration was 1.43 and 0.99 mg/kg, 74.94 and 5.14 mg/kg for Zn; and for Cu, the result was 56.25 and 8.2 mg/kg for the maximum and minimum, which they are within limits described by Food Agricultural Organization, but more than health limits and health risks calculated by mean of hazard quotient (HQ) techniques for Cu and Pb which they are more than 1. The local sample that collected in Erbil city show less concentration of heavy metals and low HQ in comparison with imported samples. The carcinogenic risk study shows elevated risk of accumulative consuming of edible part of those plant which they exceed the permissible limit that is 10-6.

OBJECTIVE: Aim: To determine the normal range of serum levels of total 25(OH)VD in Iraqi healthy adult subjects and to relate its level with demographic profile and socioeconomic status.. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study was carried out at Iraq and the samples were collected during the period from August 2019 to January 2020. It included 649 adult subjects apparently healthy, from three governorates (Baghdad, Al-Anbar and Al-Basrah), Investigations included serum measurement of total 25(OH)D in all included individuals by using ELISA technique. Age, gender, marital state, blood pressure, smoking, sunshine exposure (%), hours of exposure/day, percentage of body surface area exposed, body mass index (BMI) subgroups, waist circumference (WC) subgroups, diet type, sport type and time, geographic factor (governorate) were measured and / or calculated and the levels of 25(OH)D were studied according to each of these factors. RESULTS: Results: The mean ± SD level of 25(OH)D in total (n=649) studied Iraqi subjects was (16.29 ± 8.22 ng/ml), with women were significantly deficient than men (15.76 ± 6.89 ng/ml, 17.14 ± 6.85 ng/ml; p < 0.01 respectively). However, there was no significant differences in mean values of serum 25(OH)D levels among studied governorates, subgroups of BMI, WC, marital status, smokers and nonsmoker and subgroups of age. The mean value of serum 25(OH)D was found to be decreased in January, October and November as well as according to diet and sport types. There was significant positive correlation between total 25(OH)D and sun exposed surface area, sun exposure duration and with sun exposure area. CONCLUSION: Conclusions: The mean (±SD) value of serum total 25(OH)D in Iraqi healthy subjects was 16.29 ng/ml (±8.22) reflecting the actual body status of this vitamin with lower concentration in women than in men. Type and time of sport and diet type were the major vitamin D dependent factors.

BACKGROUND: Lipases play a crucial role in various industrial applications, and microbial lipases, particularly those from bacteria, possess significant properties. With increasing concerns about the environmental and health impacts of hydrocarbons from pipelines and refineries, there is a growing need to mitigate the risks associated with these compounds. METHODS: In this study, 40 bacterial isolates were recovered from contaminated soil samples collected from multiple refineries across Iraq. Using the Vitek system, bacterial isolates were identified up to the species level, revealing that only 12 isolates exhibited lipase-producing capabilities. RESULTS: Among the lipase-producing isolates, Ralstonia mannitolilytica demonstrated the highest extracellular lipase activity, as determined by an olive oil plate assay supplemented with rhodamine B. Confirmation of the species identity was achieved through 16S rRNA gene sequencing, with the obtained sequence deposited under accession number LC772176.1. Further sequence analysis revealed single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the genome of Ralstonia mannitolilytica strain H230303-10_N19_7x_R2 (CP011257.1, positions 1,311,102 and 1,311,457). Additionally, the presence of the lipase gene was confirmed through amplification and sequencing using a thermocycler PCR. Sequence analysis of the gene, aligned using Geneious Prime software, identified SNPs (CP010799, CP049132, AY364601, CP011257, and CP023537), and a phylogenetic tree was constructed based on genetic characterization. CONCLUSION: Our findings highlight the potential of Ralstonia mannitolilytica as a promising candidate for lipase production and contribute to our understanding of its genetic diversity and biotechnological applications in hydrocarbon degradation and industrial processes.

The objective of the study is to explore the relationship between country governance practices along with political stability and Economic policy uncertainty, and stock market performance of two different economies, Pakistan and Kurdistan region of Iraq. To meet our objectives, we used the 25 years past data from 1996 to 2021. Data is collected from the DataStream database. The regression analysis is used as the method of estimation for linear and moderation effect. Our results show that regulatory quality, rules of law and political stability has significant positive relationship with stock market performance of Pakistan, but all the governance indicators have significant positive relationship with stock market performance of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Moreover, political stability has significant moderating impact between the governance practices and the performance of the stock markets of both economies indicating that the governance practices perform well with the political stability that leads to rise in the stock market indices of selected countries. Economic policy uncertainty has significant negative moderation impact due to creating the risk in both economies that decrease the performance of the stock markets of the selected economies. Finally, our study advocated some implications for the investors to increase their confidence on the stock of high political stability and low economic policy uncertainty economies. Government can take significant measures to control the uncertainty of the policy and portfolio managers can adjust their risk on the ground of the political stability and efficient governance practices countries.

Thalassemia major is one of the health problems in Iraq, especially in Kurdistan. Pre-marriage mandatory preventive screening program was established in Kurdistan in 2008, which allowed us to study the prevalence of different hemoglobinopathies among newly married young adults in this region. A total of 1154 subjects (577 couples) attending the Koya district, premarital Health center, were screened using red cell indices. Those who had mean corpuscular volume (MCV)<80 fl and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH)<27 pg had high-performance liquid chromatography and iron studies. Out of 1154 individuals that were evaluated, 183 (11.9%) had low MCV and MCH. Of the former 183 subjects, 69 (5.97%) had ß-thalassemia trait, 10 (0.86%) had δß-thalassemia trait, and no other hemoglobinopathies were recorded in our study. There was second-degree consanguinity in 4.7% of all 577 couples. In two couples, both partners had ß-thalassemia trait and both were consanguineous. Both couples decided to separate after counseling. Based on the current study, the role of the premarital screening program in decreasing the number of new thalassemia major cases among the Kurdish population is laudable. Therefore, mandatory premarital screening is advised in all parts of Iraq.

This study conducted in Baghdad focused on patients with coronary heart disease admitted to three hospitals. The study included 60 Iraqi patients with coronary heart disease and a control group of 30 healthy individuals. Blood samples were collected from both groups after fasting. The study analyzed the demographic characteristics of the patients and control group, including age groups, sex distribution, and BMI. The majority of patients had hypertension, while 58.33% had diabetes. The study found that IHD patients had significantly higher T3 and T4 levels compared to the control group. However, there was no significant difference in TSH levels. The study also examined thyroid function parameters among different age groups and found no significant differences in individuals with hypothyroidism. The highest prevalence of hyperthyroidism was among individuals with hypertension, while the highest spread of hypothyroidism was among individuals with diabetes. The study observed significant differences in mean HbA1c levels among the three groups, with the highest levels in patients with hypothyroidism. In conclusion, this study suggests potential alterations in thyroid function associated with ischemic heart disease and emphasizes the need for further research on the clinical implications and underlying mechanisms involved.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated health and social inequities among migrant groups more than others. Higher rates of poverty, unemployment, living in crowded households, and language barriers have placed resettled refugees at a higher risk of facing disparities during the COVID-19 pandemic. To understand how this most vulnerable population has been impacted by the ongoing pandemic, this study reports on the responses of 128 Iraqi refugees in the city of London, Ontario, to a survey on the economic, social, and health-related impacts that they have faced for almost two years since the beginning the pandemic. The analysis of the survey indicated that 90.4% of the study population reported having health concerns during the pandemic while 80.3% expressed facing financial distress. The results also show that 58.4% of respondents experienced some form of social isolation. These all suggest that refugees are faced with several barriers which can have a compounding effect on their resettlement experience. These findings provide resettlement and healthcare providers with some information that may assist in reducing the impact of COVID-19 and other possible health security emergencies on resettled refugees and their communities.

Background: Fertility plays a great role in animal reproduction since high-quality semen improves sheep industry reproduction. The current worldwide data revealed the close relation of C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) to the reproductive function of rams. Aims: Evaluation of the effect of CNP on cooled sperms using traditional and molecular assays. Methods: Totally, of 20 testicular samples were collected, processed to obtain the semen samples, and divided into two parts; one was treated with a suitable dose of CNP, and the other served as a control. Sperm samples of both groups were cooled for 3 days and tested at 0, 24, 48, and 72 hours. Results: The findings revealed that the suitable dose of CNP-treated sperms was 0.01 × 10-13. Values of individual motility, live sperms, and sperm concentration were reduced significantly in CNP-24h, CNP-48h, and CNP-72h when compared to control; however, abnormal sperms were increased in both control and CNP groups at 24, 48, and 72 hours when compared to values of 0 hour. Concerning turbidmetric analysis, a significant reduction in values of lag time was observed in CNP when compared to control at all times of cooling intervals. In both CNP and control groups, motility index was decreased at 24, 48, and 72 hours when compared to 0 hour. For velocity, significant increases were shown in CNP compared with control at all cooling intervals. However, values of both groups were increased significantly at 24, 48, and 72 hours times when compared to 0 hour. Fraction of rapidly moving sperm of CNP was elevated at 0 hour and decreased at 24, 48, and 72 hours when compared to control. Expression of the hNPR-B gene was reduced gradually in sperms of CNP and control groups at times of cooling intervals. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this first Iraqi study targets the effect of CNP on epididymal sperms of rams. However, changes that occur after excessive CNP exposure remain unclear, and the toxicological profile of CNP requires furthermore supplements.

BACKGROUND: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic and systemic seronegative inflammatory spondyloarthropathy, an autoimmune disease that has been associated with impaired Endoplasmic Reticulum Aminopeptidase (ERAP)-1 activity, which is involved in priming antigenic peptides. The purpose of this study is to investigate the association of 3-UTR of ERAP1 gene polymorphism (rs13167972) with the AS occurrence susceptibility in a sample of Iraqi male patients. METHODS: The AS patients were diagnosed clinically and by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and other clinical and laboratory criteria like symptoms, increased C-reactive protein (CRP), and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). The blood grouping and Body Mass Index (BMI) were also investigated to be associated with AS occurrence. The genotyping of the 3-UTR region of the ERAP1 gene (rs13167972) was done by Sanger sequencing. RESULTS: The results revealed that the AS occurred significantly in the age group of 20-35 years (p = 0.013). The BMI shows that the AS patients were overweighted males (p = 0.013) and the most predominant blood group in AS patients was O- (p = 0.002). The ESR and serum level of CRP were significantly raised in AS patient sera (< 0.001). The results of the receiver-operating characteristics curve analysis (ROC) revealed that the CRP (AUC: 0.995, cut-off: 2.48 mg/L, had 95% %sensitivity, 100% specificity, p < 0.001) is more discriminative than BMI (AUC: 0.300, cut-off: 46.91 kg, had 0% sensitivity, 100% specificity, p = 0.001), and ESR (AUC: 0.808, cut-off: 7.50 mm/hr, had 60% sensitivity, 88% specificity, p < 0.001) in distinguishing between AS patients and control group. The genotyping of the 3-UTR region of ERAP1 gene (rs13167972) result shows that the AG and GG genotypes are significantly occurring in AS patients (70%, OR: 2.33, 95%CI: 1.02-5.36, p = 0.04). The G allele is significantly occurring in AS patients (47%, OR: 2.07, 95CI%: 1.15-3.71, p = 0.01). CONCLUSION: The AS occurred in young overweight males with blood group O-. The AG and GG genotypes are risk factors for AS development while the G allele is a risk factor that increases the chances for disease incidence.

OBJECTIVE: Aim: To assess the prevalence of medicinal plants, use among Iraqi patients with chronic disease and compare it with another study in same or different countries. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and Methods: A randomized Internet and social media questionnaire was used. In this cross-sectional study, peoples with chronic diseases from different age group were recruited. Participants had an internet questionnaire to answer. This questionnaire embraced age, gender, occupation, marital status, education level and some lifestyle details as demographic data, a large proportion of the questionnaire was related to herbs, both prescribed and OTC ones. RESULTS: Results: Gender distribution: about 70% of patients were female and 30% male. Education level: uneducated - 35%, primary school - 30%, secondary school - 25%, academic - 10%. Place of residence: 30% lived in urban and 70% in rural areas. Diseases distribution: 30% hypertension, 20% diabetes, 10% asthma, 10% migraine, 15% hyperlipidemia and 15% rheumatoid arthritis. Medicinal plants: 10% green tea, 5%fish oil, 15% anise 25% castor oil and 15% spirulina. CONCLUSION: Conclusions: The study reported a high prevalence of medicinal herbs use among patients with chronic disease in Iraq. Several factors (rural residence, education, age, multiple chronic conditions and low quality of life) associated with medicinal herbs use. This knowledge will help policy makers and health care providers for decision making on the safe use of herbal medicine.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the Iraqi population's health behaviors, knowledge, screening, attitudes toward colorectal cancer (CRC), and possible predictors that may affect their knowledge level. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SAMPLE: One thousand three hundred sixty-one Iraqi adults from Sulaymaniyah/Iraq. MEASUREMENTS: The odds ratio (OR) was used to find the association between knowledge of CRC and associated factors. RESULTS: Among participants, 6.1% had a colonoscopy, 4.0% had a sigmoidoscopy, and 60.8% heard CRC screening. Participants had low knowledge level of CRC risk factors (5.52 ± 1.39), and symptoms (3.73 ± 1.16) and had a medium knowledge of screening (4.35 ± 1.02). Respondents who retired (OR = 1.30; p = .00) and who had graduated from university (OR = 0.86; p = .01) had a high knowledge of CRC, while those who were aged 70 and above (OR = -1.08; p = .00) had a low knowledge of CRC. Furthermore, it was found that Iraqi adults who answered "no idea" to questions related to attitude and who answered incorrectly questions related to risk factors were likely to have low knowledge (p = .00). CONCLUSIONS: We found a lack of knowledge, screening, and misconceptions about CRC and screening among Iraqi adults. Thus, health training and screening programs should target Iraqi populations.

The main objectives of this research are to assess groundwater, a primary source of drinking water in the urban areas of Hawler (Erbil) and Bnaslawa in northern Iraq, and the non-carcinogenic human health risks of nitrate contamination associated with drinking water quality. For this purpose, twenty-seven groundwater samples were collected from wells to assess the hydrogeochemical characteristics and groundwater quality for both natural and anthropogenic purposes during the wet (May 2020) and dry (September 2020) seasons. During the wet and dry seasons, NO3- in groundwater ranged from 14.00 to 61.00 mg/L and 12.00 to 60.00 mg/L, with an average value of 35.70 and 29.00 mg/L, respectively. Approximately 25.92% of the samples exceeded the permissible limit of the WHO (2011) drinking water standard. The ratios of NO3-/Na+ vs. Cl-/Na+ and SO42-/Na+ vs. NO3-/Na+ indicate the effect of agricultural activities and wastewater leaking from cesspools or septic tanks on the quality of groundwater during the wet and dry seasons. The entropy weighted water quality index method ranked 62.5% and 75% of the urban groundwater as not recommended for drinking, and the remaining samples are moderately suitable in both wet and dry seasons. The non-carcinogenic human health risk assessment displayed that during the wet and dry seasons, 29.6% and 25.9% of adults, 48% and 30% of children, and 48.1% and 29.6% of infants were exposed to increased concentrations of nitrate in groundwater. Due to high nitrate in drinking water, non-carcinogenic human health risk levels vary as infant > child > adults. The main findings obtained from this study can assist policymakers in better understanding the hydrogeochemical properties of groundwater in terms of drinking water safety, thereby facilitating the management of water resources to take the necessary measures.

Identifying factors contributing to water salinity is paramount in efficiently managing limited water resources in arid environments. The primary objective of this study is to enhance understanding regarding the hydrochemistry, source, and mechanism of water salinity, as well as to assess the suitability of water for various uses in southern Iraq. The groundwater samples were collected from water wells and springs and analyzed for major cations and anions along with stable isotopes (δ18O and δ2H) to accomplish the objective. The analysis of major ion chemistry, hydrochemical techniques, principal component analysis (PCA), and isotope signatures were adopted to determine the primary factors contributing to water mineralization. The study inferred that evaporation and geological processes encompassing water-rock interactions, such as dissolution precipitation and ion exchange, were key processes. The stable isotope analysis revealed that the water originated from meteoric sources and underwent significant evaporation during or before infiltration. The utility assessment of water samples indicates that most samples are not appropriate for consumption and are significantly below the established standards for potable water. In contrast, a significant portion of the groundwater samples were found to meet the criteria for irrigation suitability by adopting Wilcox and the US Salinity Laboratory criteria. The groundwater could be considered for irrigation with proper salinity control management. Overall, this study has significantly improved the understanding of the hydrogeochemical regimes and acts as a first step toward the sustainable utilization of water resources.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 is influenced by genetic and epigenetic factors, including miR-155, which affects immune cell and virus functions and laboratory biomarkers. OBJECTIVE: To evaluates miR-155's role as a biomarker for SARS-CoV-2 detection and monitoring, examining its significance in identifying infection in both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals using ROC curve analysis. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 70 patients who attended Medical City Hospital in Baghdad from June 2022 to April 2023 and were determined to be associated with SARS-CoV-2 (35 patients were hospitalized at the Intensive Care Units due to the severity of their symptoms while the other 35 were left in the hospital upon treatment.). Additionally, 35 samples were collected as a healthy control group. RESULTS: The expression level of miR-155 in the serum of samples showed a high level (fold change: 9.81 ± 5.50) in the severe patients' group in comparison with the moderate patients' group (fold change: 4.17 ± 2.93) and healthy group (fold change: 1.08 ± 0.01). To assess the performance of miR-155 and laboratory biomarkers, a (ROC) curve was utilized to determine the sensitivity and specificity. CONCLUSIONS: The miR-155 gene, overexpressed in SARS-CoV-2 patients, correlates with disease activity and severity, potentially serving as a biomarker for diagnosis and a potential therapeutic target.

BACKGROUND: Imported cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a growing problem with increasing global travel to endemic areas. Returned travelers with CL are easy to be misdiagnosed and mistreated due to the lack of awareness for the disease to the physicians in non-endemic region that may lead to unfavorable outcome. Our study intends to summarize the characteristics of Leishmania infection imported from Iraq, so as to help Chinese physicians diagnose and treat the disease. All CL patients were treated with intralesional injection of antimony. METHODS: The definitive diagnosis of CL is based on the parasite identification by microscopic examination directly on lesion smear or parasite culture, PCR amplification of Leishmania-specific internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS-1). The phylogenetic analysis, the immunopathological examination and the cytokine detection were proceeded after the diagnosis. RESULTS: We have identified 25 CL cases in migrant Chinese workers returned from Iraq for the first time with L. major as the major species of infected Leishmania parasite. Clinical features of the Iraq-imported CL include the history of skin exposure to sandflies bite and the lesions mostly on the exposed limbs. More ulcerative wet lesion was observed than nodular dry lesion. PCR is not only used to detect Leishmania parasite with high sensitivity, but also to identify the species of infected parasite through sequencing the amplified Leishmania-specific ITS-1 gene. The phylogenetic analysis based on the amplified ITS-1 sequences revealed that the infected Leishmania was closed related to the species and strains endemic in Iraq. The immunopathological examination revealed the T-cell filtrated cellular immune response with less B cells and NK cells involved. The cytokine profile measured in the skin lesion also confirmed the Th1 cellular response with higher expression levels of IFN-γ, IL-6 and IL-8. The skin lesions in CL patients were healed after being treated locally with antimony. CONCLUSIONS: The clinical and parasitological features of these Chinese CL cases imported from Iraq provide useful information for the diagnosis and treatment of CL that is not commonly seen in Chinese local population.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Mastectomy, a common intervention for breast cancer, has substantial implications for a woman's quality of life (QoL). However, the literature on QoL outcomes following mastectomy-with or without breast reconstruction (BR) is scant. This study aims to assess and compare the QoL among Iraqi women post-mastectomy, examining the impacts of undergoing BR. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive cross-sectional study across multiple centers in Iraq from April to September 2021. Our cohort consisted of 404 women who had a mastectomy for breast cancer treatment, 154 of whom also chose to have BR. Utilizing the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer's (EORTC) tools specifically, select domains from EORTC QLQ-BR23, QLQ-C30, and QLQ-BRECON23-we evaluated various facets of their QoL. RESULTS: The mean QoL score was 54 out of 100, with patients who did not undergo BR reporting slightly higher scores (55) compared to those who did (52). Notably, social and sexual functioning scores were statistically superior in the non-BR group. Satisfaction with surgery, sexual function, and breast aesthetics were the lowest rated aspects among BR patients, indicating a considerable gap between expectations and outcomes. Marital status and the type of mastectomy notably influenced body image and sexual function. A significant portion of patients (100 out of 250) opted out of BR due to recurrence concerns, while 26.2% (106 out of 154) pursued BR to restore their pre-mastectomy physique. CONCLUSION: Contrary to the anticipated benefits of BR, our findings suggest that women who underwent the procedure reported a lower QoL compared to those who did not. The outcomes highlight the discrepancy between expected and actual benefits of BR, suggesting a pressing need for comprehensive rehabilitation programs. These programs should aim to enhance the QoL for post-mastectomy patients and provide in-depth counseling to align expectations with the potential realities of BR.

Objectives: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), generally comprising Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), has become a significant global public health concern in the last decade. This study aimed to determine the alternations in the whole genomic expression profile of patients with IBD in this geographic location for the first time, as there are very few articles in the literature addressing this specific aspect of the field. Methods: The study was conducted in Erbil Governorate in the Kurdistan region of Iraq from July 2021 to July 2022. The genome expression profiles of 10 patients with IBD were compared to their matched controls. The sequences used in the design of the array were selected from GenBank®, dbEST and RefSeq. Whole blood RNA was extracted and hybridisation was conducted on the GeneChip® human genome U133A 2.0 array. The Scanner 3000 was used to scan high-resolution images and the General Comprehensive Operating System was used to read the results. Results: The upregulated genes shared between patients with UC and CD were RIT2, BCL2L1, MDM2 and FKBP8, while the downregulated genes they shared were the NFKBIB, DDX24 and RASA3 genes. Conclusions: Upregulated and downregulated gene expression patterns were detected in individuals with IBD, offering diagnostic potential and opportunities for treatment by targeting the associated pathways.

Entamoeba histolytica infects the large intestine of humans, causing a spectrum of clinical appearances ranging from asymptomatic colonization to severe intestinal and extra-intestinal disease. The parasite is identical microscopically to commensal nonpathogenic amoeba. To detect the pathogenic Entamoeba and estimate the precise prevalence of the parasite among the symptomatic pediatric population using molecular techniques. 323 fecal samples were collected from symptomatic children admitted to Sulaimani Pediatric Teaching Hospital, Sulaimaniyah Province, Iraq, from June to October 2021. A structured, validated questionnaire was prepared and used to report participants' gender, residency, and drinking water source. Then, stool samples were microscopically examined, and the positive samples were submitted to molecular analysis by amplifying the 18s rRNA gene using nested PCR to differentiate E. histolytica from other nonpathogenic Entamoeba. Finally, gene sequences were done to confirm the species. Microscopically, 58 positive samples represented Entamoeba species infection rate of 18% among symptomatic patients. However, only 18 samples were positive for E. histolytica based on molecular methods, which accounts for 31% of the positive by microscopy and 5.6% among the 323 symptomatic populations. NCBI, available in their database, gives the gene sequence and accession number. Patients' sociodemographic data and water sources were directly related to the infection rate. Classical microscopic examination provides a misleading profile about the prevalence of E. histolytica in an endemic region that might lead to unnecessary treatments and a lack of appropriate management for patients.

Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. To reduce the mortality rate, early detection and proper treatment should be ensured. Computer-aided diagnosis methods analyze different modalities of medical images to increase diagnostic precision. In this paper, we propose an ensemble model, called the Mitscherlich function-based Ensemble Network (MENet), which combines the prediction probabilities obtained from three deep learning models, namely Xception, InceptionResNetV2, and MobileNetV2, to improve the accuracy of a lung cancer prediction model. The ensemble approach is based on the Mitscherlich function, which produces a fuzzy rank to combine the outputs of the said base classifiers. The proposed method is trained and tested on the two publicly available lung cancer datasets, namely Iraq-Oncology Teaching Hospital/National Center for Cancer Diseases (IQ-OTH/NCCD) and LIDC-IDRI, both of these are computed tomography (CT) scan datasets. The obtained results in terms of some standard metrics show that the proposed method performs better than state-of-the-art methods.
